Unpredictable winter weather on the South Dakota prairie

Winter is a dangerous time of year on the South Dakota prairie.

Blizzards regularly bring several inches of snow and strong winds to South Dakota, closing interstates, businesses and schools.

We are so grateful for the warmth and safety your generosity provides for our Lakota (Sioux) families on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.

Blizzard conditions — temperatures below freezing or even below zero, combined with strong winds and snow — can create life-threatening conditions in the blink of an eye.

This year, it’s been cold enough on several days to keep local school children indoors at recess. Even if the sun is shining, a temperature of zero combined with 20 mile per hour wind means frostbite occurs in less than 15 minutes!

Can you imagine trying to flee from a cold and dangerous situation — maybe at night — with your children?
