The Sacred Heart Center recently hosted a special event designed to educate, empower, uplift and refresh local women leading into the fall and winter seasons.

“We hope that every woman who participated feels invigorated,” said Margaret, Director of Cheyenne River Indian Outreach (CRIO). “With the educational information and tools to take better care of themselves, they will also feel confident and empowered.”

Speakers for the day included Jerilyn Church, CEO for the Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Health Board and Brenda Hill, Co-Director of the South Dakota Coalition for Ending Domestic & Sexual Violence.

In addition to keynote speakers, women enjoyed special style tips courtesy of Edison Ritchie and his talented staff of The Edison Ritchie Project, which included haircuts and styles, make-up and a photo shoot to commemorate the day.

“I really enjoyed the event,” said a CRIO client who can’t be identified. “I liked the part about all women being sacred and strong. I especially liked the journaling part that Ms. Church did with us. It felt great to have a cut and style. I haven’t had my hair cut in a very long time, so it was really nice to get my hair done.”

As uplifting as it was for the women who participated, CRIO staff loved the event as well.

“This simple thing made the women who attended feel beautiful inside and out,” said Callie, Family Violence Services Advocate at CRIO. “Being encouraged to care for themselves showed them they are valuable. Haircuts and styles from Edison Ritchie made them feel beautiful. It’s so fulfilling to know events like these make a difference.”

“Women lead such busy lives working, taking care of their children, grandchildren, family and community,” said Margaret. “Everyone needs to remember to set some time aside to take care of themselves. We are so grateful to Ms. Church, Ms. Hill, Mr. Ritchie and the wonderful people Mr. Ritchie brought with him for making this such an extraordinary day.”

Upcoming events hosted by the Sacred Heart Center include:

  • Training for local Law Enforcement in Domestic Violence.
  • Sex Trafficking II: First Responders Informational Workshop.
  • Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
