On September 17, St. Joseph’s Indian School held their 40th Annual Powwow — Wacipi — in Chamberlain. Over 160 youth dancers and nine drum groups competed. St. Joseph’s Powwow Royalty were crowned Friday at the Recreation Center. Diamond, sixth grade, was crowned Miss St. Joseph’s and Mersayis, fourth grade, was crowned Junior Miss St. Joseph’s. Tarles, sixth grade, was named Eagle Staff Bearer. Cultural workshops on Friday provided visitors an opportunity to make their own dreamcatcher and learn about the medicine wheel. St. Joseph’s students provided tours of St. Joseph’s elementary school in the afternoon. Saturday morning began with tours of students’ campus homes. After a blessing of the powwow grounds, veterans began the Grand Entry procession at noon, followed by dancers. The day’s events were capped off with Mass at Our Lady of the Sioux Chapel and a traditional meal. Prizes were awarded to top dancers and drum groups.
