Our SPED program encourages success!

St. Joseph’s Indian School goes above and beyond to encourage success in the classroom. One program that pushes our students toward success is the Special Education program.

Robin, one of St. Joseph’s Special Education staff members explains, "We have some students who are behind their peers when they come to school at St. Joseph’s or, for different reasons, fall behind their peers."

Within the Special Education (SPED) department, five teachers, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist and a physical therapist work together as a team to give individual attention to the skills the students are lacking. They create Individual Service Plans (ISP) for each student, which allows teaching and amount of work to be altered to fit the child’s need.

St. Joseph’s students work hard to achieve their academic goals.

St. Joseph’s students work hard to achieve their academic goals.

"There are times", Robin explains, "when a child on an Individual Service Plan may need individual or smaller group settings than can be found in the classroom. The SPED staff pulls those students out and teaches them directly which allows for extra time to complete assignments and provides opportunities to utilize different methods to obtain the goal of the lesson."

St. Joseph’s success rate is rather impressive! The school currently has 19 students on academic Individual Service Plans.

  • Four of the 19 students who do not need complete assistance, but minimal monitoring of their goals.
  • Several others are participating in the classroom with an aide or Special Education Department staff if needed.
  • Three of the 19 students currently need direct 1:1 instruction.

The purpose of the Special Education Department is to strengthen the student’s skills and get them back into the classroom.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to help students achieve their academic goals!
