Here at St. Joseph's Indian School, the handcrafted Lakota (Sioux) star owinja — quilts — are far more beautiful than works of art. They represent honor, integrity and gratitude. Star quilts are one of the most valued gifts of the Lakota (Sioux) people, often made for "giveaway" events such as memorial feasts, celebrations, naming ceremonies and marriages.
