The bald eagle - waŋbli, is our national symbol and a recent visitor at St. Joseph’s Indian School!

Robert of the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota presented an educational program free of charge.

and summer programs attended the two morning presentations, while the afternoon presentation was open to the public.

“It’s an incredible learning opportunity for everyone,” said Dixie Thompson, who organized the presentation.

Thompson is the director of
St. Joseph’s Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center. To conclude the presentation, Robert took questions from the audience:
  • How old is Angel? (11 years)
  • How much does Angel weigh? (10 ½ pounds)
  • What does Angel eat? (rats, rabbits, fish and prairie dogs, to name a few)
  • How does Angel catch food? (with her sharp talons and uses her beak like a can opener)
  • Can you have eagle feathers? (Most people cannot, however, this rule does not apply to Native Americans)
