On Veterans’ Day, St. Joseph’s Indian School is proud to honor those who have served our country. Many St. Joseph’s Indian School alumni, members of students’ families and staff are proudly serving or have served in our nation’s Armed Forces.

Historically, the Lakota (Sioux) people have been recognized as great warriors. In modern Lakota tradition, the akicita - warriors - are honored during powwows, reflecting their great importance to the Native American culture.

St. Joseph’s is especially proud of our former students and staff! Here are a few highlights:

Orville, co-recipient of St. Joseph’s 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award, served in the US Navy in the South Pacific from 1942-1945. Orville was one of the first students when St. Joseph’s opened in 1927!

Casimir, co-recipient of St. Joseph’s 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award, served in the US Coast Guard from 1940-1945. He also attended St. Joseph’s during our first year.

Sibby served in a Navy Combat Demolition Unit as Chief Petty Officer. During WWII, he served in North Africa and the South Pacific from 1942-1945. Sibby attended St. Joseph’s from 1933-1937.

D’Kera graduated from St. Joseph’s High School Program in 2011 and joined the Army Reserves. She attended boot camp over the summer and will begin college classes in January 2013.
