The Lakota boys and girls attending our summer programs are enjoying fun-filled days at St. Joseph’s Indian School! Many students return home to spend the summer break with their families, but there’s always a safe place - and lots to do - for the children who stay at St. Joseph’s!
There’s lots of free time for puzzles and other games.

St. Joseph’s Summer Program offers lots of fun to students who need a safe, structured environment for longer than the normal school year. After classes in the morning to keep reading and math skills sharp, students do all the things kids should be doing in the summer - swimming, riding bikes and playing games.
A day at St. Joseph’s summer home:

- 6:30 a.m. rise and shine, wash up, dress, clean your room and make your bed
- 7:15 a.m. Breakfast
- 7:45 a.m. Charges
- 8:25 a.m. Prayers
- 8:30 a.m. Arrive at school
- 11:30 a.m. Leave school for lunch at dining hall
- 12:00 a.m. Arrive home and put away laundry
- 1:00 p.m. Swimming at city pool or go on a day trip
- 3:00 p.m. Snack
- 4:00 p.m. Arrive home and play until supper
- 5:00 p.m. Supper
- 5:30 p.m. Clean up from supper
- 6:00 p.m. Go for a bike ride or walk
- 7:00 p.m. Swimming at rec center or movie
- 8:00 p.m. Shower and gather clothes for laundry
- 8:30 p.m. Snack and prayers
- 9:00 p.m. Bedtime for youngest
- 9:30 p.m. Lights out everyone
In addition to typical days, there are days that call for some extra summer fun! Houseparents have taken students to:
- Enjoy the 30 foot twisting water slide at the YMCA in Pierre, South Dakota.
- Swim at the city pool in Chamberlain.
- Enjoy bike rides on and off campus.
- Play a number of group games, including old games like Mother May I, Red Light Green Light, the Egg Store, Red Rover Red Rover.
- Participate in a community service project by helping clean up after a benefit supper for a local man suffering from cancer.
- Visit Storybook Land in Aberdeen, South Dakota, a nursery rhyme and fairy tale-based park donated to the city by the author of The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum, who once lived in Aberdeen.
To celebrate Independence Day, students and their houseparents will enjoy a cook out, complete with games and watermelon for dessert. Later that night, they will head downtown to watch the fireworks show.
