Sr. Madeleine LeCompte, OSBS, St. Joseph’s alumnae and former board member, passed away December 19, 2012 at age 89.

Sr. Madeleine attended St. Joseph’s Indian School from 1929-1937 along with her siblings. In a 2006 interview, Sr. Madeleine recalled St. Joseph’s fondly:

“St. Joseph’s provided for all our needs. The sisters encouraged each of us to use the talents we were given. I was good at music, and I remember helping the sisters teach songs to the entire group of students. I’m very grateful for those years.”

Sr. Madeleine received St. Joseph’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006.
After leaving St. Joseph’s, Sr. Madeleine attended school at the St. Francis Mission. She joined the Oblate Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament right after her graduation in 1941. She worked in Marty, South Dakota and then spent years helping meet the needs of the Lakota (Sioux) people. She visited homes and provided religious instruction, prayer and counseling for the Native American people first on the Cheyenne River Reservation and then in Rapid City.

Sr. Madeleine served four terms on St. Joseph’s Board of Directors, from May 1997 to January 2009. She received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2006.

At the time of her passing, Sister Madeleine resided in Rapid City, South Dakota.
